Meet the Team: Charlie Collier, Crafting Cabins with Precision and Personality

Spotlight on staff - 03/07/25

Say hello to Charlie Collier, one of our seasoned cabin installers here at Norwegian Log. He's been with us for a fair bit, seeing countless projects through from start to finish. Charlie's expertise with timber is matched only by his exceptionally engaging personality, making him a highly valued member of our team. We recently caught up with him to discuss his role and what drives him.

"I make cabins," Charlie states simply when asked about his role. And he certainly does! He's been with Norwegian Log for four and a half years, a significant tenure in anyone's book. He's travelled "here, there and everywhere" across the UK, Wales, and even Scotland, putting up an impressive number of our bespoke cabins.

From Scottish Scenery to Riverside Retreats

When asked about standout projects, Charlie offers a few examples. He recently enjoyed  the Viaduct Fisheries, a project where the team was accommodated on-site. "Being able to just look outside your window and see the cabin you're crafting, it was very nice. Also, didn't have to go too far in the morning." The convenience of nearby amenities was also a distinct advantage.

The Scottish project receives a mention for its stunning surroundings, but it is often the Welsh projects that truly capture his imagination. "There's another one in Wales... over by the Brecon Beacons. It's just, again, it's the scenery. Just a lot of being in Wales, to be honest, it's beautiful."

Life Outside the Log

So, what does Charlie get up to when he's not on-site? He prioritises self-care, incorporating gym sessions and enjoying films, particularly horror. Gaming was once a significant pastime, though he hasn't really played in the last year or so.

Beyond his professional toolkit, Charlie possesses a distinctive personal style that is immediately noticeable. His personal expression also includes notable tattoo work, with pieces from the renowned artist Frank Carter. This contributes to a calm, yet confident demeanour that enhances his presence on site. His genuinely personable nature means he builds excellent rapport.

Interestingly, working away actually helps Charlie maintain a routine. "It works pretty well for me, because I have a lot more discipline on my routine and stuff like that." He is also keen on cooking, which aids in maintaining a healthy lifestyle while on the road.

Home for Charlie is just eight minutes from the yard, in Earley, Berkshire. When he returns after a four-day working week, his priority is unwinding. "I just want to be able to log out, not doing anything, just starfish basically." A completely understandable sentiment after demanding workdays.

The Reward of a Job Well Done

Four and a half years in, Charlie continues to find immense satisfaction in his work. What is the most rewarding aspect? "There's nothing quite like getting stuck in, creating something from scratch, and then seeing the client's reaction." For Charlie, it is about facilitating that transition for clients, from a conventional house to a log cabin. "It's the reaction to just take pride in the work, because it's a very niche." He also recognises the unparalleled quality Norwegian Log delivers: "We are the high end, top of the top, the best."

Charlie shared a memorable initiation from his early days. On a project involving horses, our very own Paul Preston managed to get Charlie, a non-rider, onto a horse! "I think it's like I've been there for three months. And there's a photo, me in the cowboy hat, riding a horse!" We're still hoping to unearth that photo, Charlie!

It is clear that Charlie is not only a skilled installer but also a vital part of the Norwegian Log family. His dedication and pride in his work shine through every cabin he erects, and his engaging personality ensures he is a highly positive influence within our team. We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have him as part of the Norwegian Log family.

It's warm and it's cosy; it's solid and it's quiet. The fragrance of pine reminds you of Scandinavian forests and summer evenings. Your imagination starts to take you places. You imagine a wood burner, perhaps a desk or why not just some space to think?

Our show home is 36 years old, yet customers still say it looks and feels brand new. That's the quality of our workmanship and the materials. When you step into a Norwegian Log building you're stepping into a feeling and just like our buildings it's one that will last.
