Meet the Team: Nick Johnson, Our Bright New Finance Apprentice

Spotlight on staff - 22/04/25

Nick

Here at Norwegian Log, we're a tight-knit bunch, and we love introducing you to the faces behind our log homes.

This week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with one of our newest team members, Nick Johnson. Having joined us just six weeks ago, Nick has already brought a breath of fresh air and a real eagerness to learn to our finance department.

Six Weeks in Finance

Nick's first six weeks have been a whirlwind of learning within our finance department. He's quickly getting to grips with everything from processing supplier payments (account payables) to handling customer receipts (account receivables), as well as the essential task of invoicing. At just 19, Nick holds the distinction of being our youngest colleague, and it's been inspiring to witness his quick integration into the team. Our conversation naturally began with his initial weeks here, and Nick shared how quickly the time has flown by, packed with new experiences and a wealth of learning within the finance department.

What sparked Nick's interest in Norwegian Log were our strong company values from his initial interactions. He thoughtfully recalled his interviews with Jonothon and Ian, where he made a conscious effort to understand their experiences within the company. The respect and collaborative spirit he witnessed during those conversations resonated deeply and heavily influenced his decision.

Structure and Future Goals

Our discussion then shifted to the world of finance itself, and what specifically captures Nick’s interest. He articulated a clear appreciation for the structured nature of the field, highlighting the importance of deadlines and well-defined processes in creating a sense of order and focus. This methodical approach, he explained, is key to his productivity and helps him effectively manage his workload. Beyond the structure, Nick also acknowledged his comfort and aptitude for working with numbers, a fundamental aspect of any finance role. Looking to the future, his ambition to one day own his own business underscores the valuable experience he hopes to gain during his time with us.

Beyond the Balance Sheet

It's not all spreadsheets and figures, of course. I was keen to learn about Nick’s passions outside of the office. His enthusiasm shone through as he described his commitment to both running and weightlifting. He recounted how his interest in weightlifting began around the age of fifteen, and for his 16th birthday, he received his own set of weights. He's consistently stuck with it ever since, regularly hitting the gym. For Nick, it's not just about physical strength; it's also a powerful way to de-stress and find mental clarity through focused effort.

Balancing Work and Study

As Nick settles into his role, he’s also preparing to embark on his academic journey. He shared that his pre-entry assessment for his Level Three Bookkeeping Qualification with BPP is just around the corner, with the college course itself set to begin in June. This 18-month program will run concurrently with his apprenticeship, providing a solid theoretical foundation to his practical experience here at Norwegian Log.

Looking to the Future

Looking ahead, Nick has a clear vision for his professional development. His immediate goal is to successfully complete his Level Three Qualification and then progress towards achieving his Level Four, the crucial step towards becoming a fully qualified accountant.

Nick's eagerness to learn, his thoughtful approach, and his positive attitude make him a wonderful addition to Norwegian Log. We’re all excited to support him as he embarks on his apprenticeship and his academic journey, and we look forward to witnessing his growth and contributions in the years to come. Welcome to the Norwegian Log, Nick! We're over the moon to welcome you aboard.

It's warm and it's cosy; it's solid and it's quiet. The fragrance of pine reminds you of Scandinavian forests and summer evenings. Your imagination starts to take you places. You imagine a wood burner, perhaps a desk or why not just some space to think?

Our show home is 36 years old, yet customers still say it looks and feels brand new. That's the quality of our workmanship and the materials. When you step into a Norwegian Log building you're stepping into a feeling and just like our buildings it's one that will last.
