Where Time Stands Still: 20 Years of Scandinavian Charm at Cottesmore Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Blog - 01/08/25

The drive through West Sussex is gentle and green… winding lanes, sunlight dancing through leaves… and then, tucked away just beyond the bustle, you arrive. Cottesmore Hotel Golf & Country Club – a place where the air feels fresher, the pace a little slower, and the welcome as warm as an open fire.

Here, nestled between tall trees, stand seven alpine log cabins. Not just cabins – but handcrafted Norwegian Log lodges that have quietly stood for two decades.
From the moment they were built, they’ve been a bridge between worlds: authentic Scandinavian living, right here in the English countryside.

Step inside, and the details unfold like a well-told story.
Sixty square metres of space, bathed in soft light. Underfloor heating beneath your feet.
A kitchen ready for feasts or simple suppers.
A dining table of light oak, set for six, waiting for laughter to fill the room.
Two deep sofas invite you to sink in… perhaps with a book, perhaps just to watch the afternoon drift by.

Beyond the glass doors, a pine deck – in summer, alive with the smell of barbecues and the gentle hum of the countryside.

And yet, just minutes away, the life of Cottesmore hums.
On a golden August morning, we walked the estate with Matthew Rogerson.
Golfers waved from fairways, rackets clashed on full tennis and padel courts, the courtyard buzzed with chatter and the soft clink of glasses from a charming horse box bar.
The panoramic clubhouse stood proud, its Phoenix Bar & Restaurant wrapping views around you in every direction.

The oak-beamed Barn Room waited patiently for the next wedding celebration, while the lawn outside – immaculate and sunlit – looked like a page torn from a storybook.
Inside, the gym, pool, sauna, steam room, and beauty salon promised another rhythm of relaxation.

And all the while, the cabins remained – a quiet constant.
Every three years, they’re sanded and recoated, their timber glowing as warmly today as the day they were first unveiled.
Always at full capacity, always drawing guests who want to taste the Scandinavian lifestyle without crossing oceans.
For some, they’re a month-long home from which to explore London, the Shires, the southern coast.
For others, they’re simply a pause – a chance to watch planes land in the far distance, breathe deep, and feel the silence.

At Norwegian Log, we’re proud beyond words.
Proud to have built something that’s become part of Cottesmore’s soul.
Proud that two decades on, these cabins don’t just stand – they belong.
And honoured to know that in the quiet moments, when the wind moves through the trees, time really does stand still.
