A Log Home Designed for Freedom, Family and Low-Maintenance Living
Traditional
For Ted and Lorraine Willers, downsizing was never about slowing down. It was about creating a simpler, more flexible way of living that would give them a comfortable home base in Sheffield, while allowing them to continue travelling the UK in their motorhome.
After years in their family home, the couple were ready for a new chapter. Their daughter moved into the original house, keeping the family home within the family, while Ted and Lorraine began looking for a solution that would give them independence, comfort and a place of their own on the smallholding.
They also wanted to maintain the lifestyle they loved. Regular trips away in their motorhome, time spent with friends and a strong community connection in Melton Mowbray were all important parts of their plans. What they needed was a permanent base that felt like home, but without the burden of maintaining a large property.
A Norwegian Log home offered exactly that.
Finding the Right Place for their New Home
Initially, Ted and Lorraine explored planning permission for a cabin at the top of the hill on their land. However, after speaking with Norwegian Log, they were introduced to a different route.
The team explained how The Caravan Act could apply and how, rather than placing the cabin further away, their new home could be positioned within the curtilage of the existing house. This created a much more practical and family-focused solution.
Now, their log home sits close to the original house, allowing Ted and Lorraine to enjoy their independence while remaining connected to their daughter and grandchildren.
The location has become one of the things they love most. It gives them privacy and their own front door, but family life is still only a few steps away. Their youngest granddaughter has already made the cabin part of her routine, running straight into Ted and Lorraine’s home when she gets back from school.
“It feels like we’ve found exactly what we needed,” says Lorraine. “We haven’t moved away from our family life, we’ve just found a new way to be part of it. We have our own little home, but the grandchildren are still close enough to come running in after school, and that means everything.”
Moving Quickly, without Compromising
The timing of the move became more urgent when their daughter’s home sold quickly. With Christmas approaching, Ted and Lorraine needed things to move fast.
Norwegian Log was able to adjust the installation slot, helping ensure they were settled into their new home in time for Christmas.
For Ted, who has now retired after owning his own business, the quality of the process mattered. With his own background in building and manufacturing, he understood the importance of good workmanship, organisation and attention to detail. Both he and Lorraine were impressed by the Norwegian Log team throughout, with Kieran receiving particular praise for his support and professionalism.
A home with Warmth, Character and Personality
Ted and Lorraine’s home has a strong sense of personality. The home shows a space that feels warm, settled and carefully considered, with the natural timber walls and vaulted ceilings creating the unmistakable feeling of a Norwegian Log home.
Inside, the exposed timber gives the home its character without the need for decorating. The walls and ceilings bring warmth, texture and depth, creating a finish that already feels complete. This was important for Ted and Lorraine, who wanted a home that would be easy to maintain and ready to enjoy.
The interiors have been styled with a rich, cosy feel. The living and dining area includes soft checked dining chairs, a large wooden dining table, warm leather sofas, patterned rugs, a log burner and personal decorative touches. It feels homely rather than minimal, with pieces that reflect their taste and life together.
The log burner is a natural focal point, sitting against the timber wall with a large clock above and the living space arranged around it. It gives the room a traditional, comfortable feel, while the open-plan layout keeps the space practical and sociable.
The kitchen provides a smart contrast to the timber interior. Light shaker-style cabinetry, black appliances, under-cabinet lighting and a speckled stone-effect worktop create a clean, modern finish. The kitchen is compact but well planned, with good worktop space, integrated appliances and considered storage.
The bathroom continues the low-maintenance theme, with grey marble-effect wall panels, black fittings and a glass shower enclosure. It has a contemporary feel and is designed to be easy to clean, practical and durable.
Outside, the home has been planned with the same care. The exterior is immaculate, with artificial grass, neat paving, planted pots and artificial flowering beds. The landscaping keeps the space attractive all year round without creating extra work. It is a home designed to look good, function well and stay easy to manage.
Designed for a Simpler Way of Living
For Ted and Lorraine, the move has given them the freedom they were looking for. Their log home is comfortable when they are there, secure when they are away and low-maintenance enough to suit their lifestyle.
They can spend time with family, enjoy each other’s company, travel in their motorhome and return to a home that feels warm, familiar and completely their own.
The design also reflects the realities of downsizing. One piece of advice they would give to others is to think carefully about storage from the start. Even with the original family home only yards away, moving into a smaller home is still a significant adjustment. Planning storage properly is an important part of making a log home work day to day.
“Downsizing is a big step,” says Lorraine. “You let go of a lot, but you also realise what really matters. For us, it was being close to family, having somewhere comfortable to come home to and being able to enjoy this stage of our lives together.”
A Home that Supports the Life They Wanted
Ted and Lorraine’s Norwegian Log home has allowed them to downsize without losing the things that matter most: independence, family connection, comfort and freedom.
It gives them a beautiful base in Sheffield, close to their daughter and grandchildren, while still allowing them to travel and enjoy time with friends across the UK.
For them, the move has worked exactly as they hoped. Their home is warm, practical, personal and easy to look after.
Most importantly, it has given them a place that supports the way they want to live now.
“This home has given us freedom without taking us away from the people we love,” says Ted. “We can set off in the motorhome, spend time with our friends and come back to a place that feels warm, safe and completely ours.”
