Meet the Team: Peter Forde, Our Design Dynamo at Norwegian Log

We're absolutely delighted to put the spotlight on Peter Forde, a truly integral part of the Norwegian Log design team. Since joining us during the unprecedented times of August 2020, Peter has brought a wealth of experience and a quietly brilliant approach to crafting the log homes of our customers' dreams.
I managed to steal a few moments with Peter amidst his busy schedule, and his thoughtful nature and dedication to his craft were immediately evident.
From Bricks and Mortar to Bespoke Beauty
Peter's background as an architectural technician for nearly three decades in the "bricks and mortar" world might seem a far cry from the natural charm of log cabin design. His extensive career involved years immersed in the intricate construction detailing across a diverse range of significant public sector projects. This included working on various government buildings, ensuring the precise technical specifications for their construction and functionality. He contributed to the infrastructure of schools, creating detailed plans for educational spaces. His expertise extended to the complex requirements of hospitals, where accuracy and adherence to stringent regulations are paramount. Furthermore, Peter was involved in projects for the Land Registry, focusing on the structural and technical aspects of these important facilities. His experience also encompassed work on Ministry of Defence sites, including barracks on Salisbury Plain, and naval establishments like HMS Nelson in Portsmouth, where he even worked on a substantial junior ratings building.
One particularly significant undertaking was a project at Whitehall, the very heart of the UK government. Peter was part of a team that conducted a comprehensive survey of an astonishing nine and a half to ten thousand rooms within a Ministry of Defence building there. This wasn't just a quick glance; it involved meticulously documenting the dimensions of each space, as the original floor plans were unavailable. This detailed survey work was crucial for a major refurbishment of the entire building. Peter recalls the unique experience of navigating the historic corridors and offices, observing the displays and artifacts that offered glimpses into the building's rich history. For someone with an appreciation for military history, it was a particularly engaging assignment.
"Coming from a mainly bricks and mortar construction background, I was an architectural technician for nearly 30 years," Peter explained. "I'd always had a mild interest in cabin building construction... [I] jumped at the chance, and I'm still here four and a half years later."
Today, Peter expertly translates the initial briefs from our sales team into detailed designs. Whether it's a cabin straight off the plan or a completely bespoke creation, Peter works diligently to find the perfect layout that meets each customer's unique needs.
"I will pick up a brief from the sales team, which will either be straight off plan, or they can be bespoke. So, it will really just be working with sales to find the right layout that suits our customers' needs."
Navigating Challenges and Personalising Dreams
Peter acknowledges the unique challenges and rewards that come with bespoke designs. He finds particular satisfaction in projects designed for individuals with disabilities, requiring careful consideration and thoughtful solutions.
"We find quite a few challenges," Peter admitted. "There's a few that we've done which have been specifically for clients with accessibility needs, which I find quite challenging but also enjoyable to do."
Peter also highlights the delicate balance of managing expectations, ensuring that customers' aspirations align with the practicalities of space. Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect for him is the direct impact his work has on the end-user.
"I think it you get a better satisfaction that you actually made someone happy, given them what they want. And you know, it's very direct... it's nice to get positive feedback."
When asked about any particularly outlandish requests, Peter chuckled, "No, I think we've made most things happen. We do have certain boundaries, of course, where we can, we'll make anything work."

The Joy of Seeing Dreams Realised
When asked about a highlight from his time at Norwegian Log, Peter's response was heartfelt and insightful.
"Every cabin that actually gets built and someone gets to enjoy is a highlight. Seeing a project become a real, finished cabin is what I really love. Seeing progress photos throughout the build helps me feel connected to the work we do."
Peter Forde is more than just our Designer; he is a quiet force of creativity and expertise here at Norwegian Log. His meticulous approach, his ability to overcome design challenges, and his genuine satisfaction in seeing our cabins come to life make him an invaluable member of our team. We are truly fortunate to have him shaping the future of Norwegian Log, one beautiful design at a time.
