Emily and Ellie’s Norwegian Log Family Annexe: A Home for Their Next Chapter

Residential Log Cabins

For Emily and Ellie, their Norwegian Log family annexe is so much more than a place to live. It is the home where they became a family.

Set on a dairy farm that has been part of Emily’s family for more than 80 years, the family annexe sits in a place already full of history, memories and meaning. Generations of family life have unfolded here, surrounded by open fields, cows, sheep, dogs and the steady rhythm of rural life. Now, with the arrival of baby Monty, a new generation has begun its story in the very same place.

“Emily’s family has been here for more than 80 years, so the farm means everything to us,” said Ellie. “We wanted a home of our own, but we also wanted to stay close to that history and to the people who matter most.”

Before moving into their cabin last summer, Emily and Ellie had spent five years living in a caravan on the farm. It gave them a base, but they always knew they wanted something more permanent, more comfortable and more suited to the future they hoped to share. They were not just looking for four walls. They were looking for a home where they could settle, grow and one day raise a family.

“Living in the caravan worked for a while, but we always knew it was not forever,” said Emily. “We wanted somewhere that felt like ours, somewhere warm, practical and ready for the next stage of our lives.”

They explored a barn conversion and other options, but planning was difficult because of the graded original farmhouse and surrounding farm structures. They needed a solution that would work with the setting, respect the character of the farm and give them a warm, practical home of their own.

Their customised Malvern 2-bed family annexe gave them exactly that.

Emily works on the family farm, continuing a connection to the land that has shaped her family for generations. The dairy farm also supplies milk for Wyke Farms, adding another lovely layer to the story. This is not just a beautiful countryside setting. It is a real working farm with purpose, tradition and life running through it every day.

Ellie works as an Operating Department Practitioner, also known as a theatre practitioner. The couple met online, married in February this year, and soon after welcomed their first baby, a beautiful little boy called Monty.

When we visited Emily and Ellie, Monty was only nine weeks old. He was calm and quiet throughout the photoshoot, settled in the arms of his parents and completely at ease in the home they had created for him.

“Having Monty here has made it feel even more special,” said Ellie. “This is the first home he will know, and that means so much to us.”

The annexe itself has a quiet, comforting beauty. Inside, the style is warm Scandinavian country, combining natural timber with soft, homely finishes. The whitewashed log walls keep the rooms bright and peaceful while still showing the traditional timber character of the annexe. Natural pine detailing around the doors, double-glazed windows and skirting adds warmth, while the sage green kitchen brings a calm, contemporary country feel.

It is a home that feels gentle from the moment you step inside. The soft neutral furnishings, wooden floors, fresh flowers and relaxed dining area all create a sense of calm. It feels lived-in, loved and ready for real family life. It is practical, comfortable and full of charm, with every detail helping to create a peaceful place for Emily, Ellie and Monty to begin this new chapter.

“We wanted it to feel homely straight away,” said Emily. “The timber gives it so much warmth, and once we added our own furniture and little touches, it felt like the home we had imagined.”

That feeling of warmth is not just visual. In winter, the black log-burning stove quickly becomes the heart of the annexe. Emily and Ellie said it is incredibly efficient, with the space feeling warm within just a few minutes of lighting it. Even on colder days, this highly insulated, double glazed log annexe soon reaches a cosy 25°C and holds onto the heat beautifully, creating the kind of comforting atmosphere that makes family life feel even more settled.

“The stove is amazing in winter,” said Emily. “It only needs to be on for a few minutes and the annexe feels so warm. It gets to about 25 degrees really quickly, and then it stays warm for ages.”

Outside, the Scandinavian spruce logs blend beautifully into the working countryside around it. The soft grey-brown timber stain gives it a natural, weathered look, while the rounded log profile and corner detailing add character and authenticity. The darker roofline, guttering and stove flue bring a practical, contemporary finish, making the two-bedroom family annexe feel both traditional and modern.

Its setting is part of what makes it so special. The annexe sits close to the main farmhouse, where beautifully manicured gardens bring a sense of elegance and care, while the wider farm adds movement, energy and adventure. It is a rare and lovely blend of premium country living, rugged rural lifestyle and everyday family warmth.

There are cows in the fields, dogs around the farm and sheep roaming freely nearby. Sometimes, the sheep even make a surprise visit inside the annexe, a detail that captures the joyful reality of life here. It is calm and beautiful, but never separate from the land around it. This is a real countryside home, full of humour, character and life.

“The sheep do sometimes wander in if they get the chance,” said Ellie. “That is just part of life here. It makes us laugh, and it is one of those little things that makes the cabin feel so connected to the farm.”

One of the most emotional parts of their story is Monty’s nursery.

Emily and Ellie had only been in the log annexe for a few weeks when they had just finished decorating the second room. Shortly afterwards, they found out they were expecting Monty. What had been a newly finished spare room quickly became a nursery, and suddenly the home they had dreamed of had an even deeper purpose.

“We had only just finished that room,” said Emily. “Then we found out we were expecting Monty, and everything changed in the loveliest way. It became his room, and suddenly the cabin felt like it was becoming a family home.”

The room has been transformed into a soft, calm and loving space for their little boy. The whitewashed timber walls make it feel light and peaceful, while the pale furniture, gentle curtains and natural tones create a nurturing atmosphere. The cot, changing station, nursing chair and baby essentials have all been carefully arranged for family life, but it is the personal touches that make the room so special.

One small detail tells a particularly lovely story. A little rugby ball sits on the drawers, a gift from their midwife. Emily had been a keen rugby player before Monty was born, and after visiting Bath to watch the rugby just weeks after the birth, their midwife brought it back for them.

“That little rugby ball is such a sweet detail,” said Ellie. “It reminds us of such a special time, and it makes the nursery feel even more personal.”

The nursery is a beautiful reminder of how quickly life can change. Emily and Ellie moved into the  as newlyweds, finally settling into a proper home after years in a caravan. Within weeks, that home had begun preparing for Monty. What started as a dream for the two of them became the first home their son would ever know.

Emily and Ellie were also really happy with the whole journey with Norwegian Log. They spoke warmly about the site team, describing them as brilliant and professional throughout. They even said they felt sorry for them working through the summer heat, although they were grateful that summer working hours helped make it easier.

“The whole team were brilliant,” said Emily. “They were really professional, and we felt completely looked after throughout the process.”

For Emily and Ellie, the Norwegian Log annexe has given them stability, comfort and independence. It has allowed them to remain on the farm that means so much to Emily’s family, while creating a private home of their own. It has given them a calm place to return to after long working days, a peaceful space to raise their baby, and a home that already holds so many memories.

For Monty, it offers something even more special.

His childhood will begin with grandparents only steps away, animals all around him, fresh air at the door and adventure waiting just beyond the garden. He will grow up with cows in the fields, dogs nearby, sheep wandering past the log annexe and sometimes even making surprise visits inside. He will grow up on a farm that has been in his family for more than 80 years, a farm that still has real purpose today.

“It is such a special place for Monty to grow up,” said Ellie. “He will have family so close, animals all around him and so much freedom to explore as he gets older. We feel very lucky that this will be his childhood.”

It is the kind of childhood many people dream of, full of nature, freedom, love and belonging.
